The Demands of Future Generations

All that’s happening in our crazy world continues to test us and even push us to our edges. You might be feeling the madness and intensity of our collective moment and grappling with your capacity to respond.

I’m reminded of when Greta Thunberg recently spoke to the UN and demanded that we not fail her and future generations on the issue of climate action. The urgency in her voice and the truth in her anger moved me into heartbreak and unknowing, but also a fierce commitment to show up as something new.

Being present to future generations will not always require the same response. In the ebb and flow of our lives, there will be times to relax and trust, and there will be times to remember our agency and mobilize a creative response. My message to you today comes amidst the intensity of our time and an impulse to act.

I am humbled by all of you who are responding fiercely, tenderly, vulnerably and heroically, in your own ways. I hope we continue to find each other in that response and rise to this moment together.
